Career Center Newsletter

So, starting out on this project I was not extremely familiar with Quark Express. But I found out how to create a layout based on our theme for "Life Is A Highway" because we figured that the Career Center helps you down the road of life. I chose map backgrounds that I felt were appropraite and found pictures from the career center that I felt were good for showing the different job oppurtunities offered. The calender was somewhat of a challenge to make but I figured it out using the graph tool, and I used the font Harrington because it was somewhat fancy but not too formal. I feel like in order to connect with the students, trhe Career Center needed a format that students could relate to such as this. The beginning of the newsletter looked somewhat formal and I did not choose the traditional yellow and blue colors, because I wanted to show that the career center is different from the school- and it is a way that students can reach out on their own. The pastel colors were chosen to not scare the students away but to keep reading. On the back of the brochure, I tried to use a circle text box which I felt made it more interesting for a little question and answer format the center might be able to use.

QUARK XPRESS
Could not load onto system

Design Rationale

In the beginning when starting off this project, I knew how to use photoshop so this was fairly easy, and it wasn't too hard to match the exact fonts because they were overall basic. Except figuring out the yellow star shape on the side was a big challenge. I had to eventually find one under shapes that sort of looked like the firework, so it wasn't exact. The background I actually found online by searching "purple fabric" and it actually looked almost exact to the little tabloid. I used Arial for most fonts and Monotype for the big font. But I already knew how to move objects and import pictures, so this was not a problem.

Quark was a lot trickier than photoshop. I learned that it is different in that the toolbar on the bottom controls everything. And that you move the pictures around with the hand tool. I also learned that it was much harder to save my document and this aggravated me. Somehow I could not save my document anywhere until I went out and bought a flashdrive myself. It was really aggravating because the pictures would not save as a GIF or JPEG and I was really stressing out after have completing the Quark portion about 3 times. But after the third time I learned how to use qurak a lot faster than before! There were things I liked about it and things I didn't. Quark was a lot more professional than photoshop, and I got to use a lot of better graphics- I found a replica of the firework I had been trying to create on photoshop. On the other hand, the size was not coming out right and it was hard adjusting to the different toolbars after using photoshop. Plus when I printed it, the colors came out all wrong only on Quark and it highlighted certain parts of my card for no reason. But overall on the screen the colors looked a lot better and closer on Quark.

Bon Jovi Design Rationale

Design Rationale: Bon Jovi Powerpoint

See the POWERPOINT

So, this task was definitely my most challenging yet. Although I have had experience working with powerpoint in the past- I had never done a fun project like this for one of my classes. I pretty much knew the custom animation- i.e. how to make all of my letters and pictures flash before you, and do extreme effects- and I saved a lot of fun pictures from google that I thought would be appropriate to represent Bon Jovi. After picking out these 6 specific backgrounds- which all had to do with guitars, or tie dye, and rock and roll- I formatted the CD slides to look just like the album covers with the same font- the main font used was COPPERPLATE GOTHIC BOLD. I used figured out how to make boom boxes as my bullet points, and use the slide transitions icon, as well as self timing my slideshow. The most challenging, was basically the same for everyone which was music. I struggled figuring out how to transfer the music from my cd to the slideshow and keep it running the whole time.

Contact Sheet

Design Rationale

I choose these particular images, because each one represents a part of me. The first picture I took in Florida and it represents a Japanese water style garden, which is a calming picture- and I thought it would be noticeable with different pixel resolutions.

The Japanese domed ceiling looked really different in different colors, and the color was so bright you could see the difference between the web copy and the printed copy.

The giraffee would fit the different orientations, because a giraffee is so tall that you can see it would look good in portrait as well as landscape. Plus it is my favorite animal!

The fountain was good for framing because it allowed me to focus on one certain aspect of the fountain, while portraying my love of water and aquatics.

The flowers were good for a abstract representation, because zooming out you can notice the picture does not focus on one particular flower, but a wide variety of colorful leaves and plants.

The picture of my boyfriend and I was one of my favorites because I had a lot of fun changing the different styles put into it- it changed the mood of the picture.

Font Poem

Rough Draft

So this is how I learned to complete this portion:

I learned to use the fill application to create a black background and found my favorite Vanessa Carlton song. Using the font tool on the upper right hand side of the Adobe Photoshop, I used the letter tool on the side scroll bar- and typed in different fonts that I thought fit the different words I decided to put in. I still couldn’t figure out how to move the letters or condense them though, but the “your” I double clicked on the level, and checked the outer glow box to give it a special effect. I also turned it pink (one of my favorite colors), even though I know we weren’t supposed to change it a color, I saved it before I changed it back.

The Final Draft

By clicking, EDIT- TRANSFORM, I learned how to rotate my words, scale and skew them at the same time. This made it a lot easier for me, and I added a few little more words to complete the poem, as well as adding special effects to the word “stars” and turning it yellow. On the bottom, just by changing the font letters, I learned to create a really cool effect. By stretching the letters out, I created even more special effects.
I was excited about the result of my poem.

Meaning of the Words:

This quote reminds me of not ever turning back from anything. It is all about sticking it out, because when something goes wrong in life, so many people question you- but the real trick is you have to believe in yourself. “I hold on to this life I’ve found.” Sometimes I question certain things: if I’m going into the right major, if I’m dating the right person, if I am doing the right thing. But really you have to believe in what you do. This is why I love this the quote so much.

I used different font types such as courier new, which is basic- Impact which really sticks out to me. Arial is kind of basic- but in my poem all it is doing is asking the question: “Who’s to say, we won’t sink in doubt?” I used Times New Roman because Trick is kind of a magic word- I thought the old fashioned style worked for it. I used Lucida Calligraphy for Stars because it worked with the shining outline like the star were shining.

I arranged “stand up straight” a little bit curved because I don’t think that any path in life is ever straight. I outlined “YOUR” because obviously the quote is about “you”. I spelt “TRICK” downwards because I thought it added almost a medieval setting. I turned “TURN” which is pretty obvious. I did a fade out on the “STARS” because stars might fade out, but they are always there.
